A Means To An End
8 - 30 June
James Glossop’s photography pop-up A Means To An End embraces ambiguity and invites interpretation. Its title questions the purpose of image-making and its role in the art world. Instead of telling the whole story, each frame in A Means to an End possesses latent potential, like the opening or closing scene of a film, capturing the feeling that something has just happened or is about to happen. The work tries to find meaning in the seemingly banal and encourages the viewer to look closer at their surroundings, and find beauty in the mysterious subtlety of the everyday.
While shooting commissions as a multi-award-winning newspaper and commercial photographer, Glossop’s editorial and commercial imagery strives for technical perfection, aiming to condense a story into one frame. In this personal project, Glossop has tried to suppress the impulse, sharpened over two decades as a professional photographer, to direct and interfere and grasp at the subject and allow himself to shoot the sparse, ethereal and sometimes melancholy scenes that draw his eye. He cites his artistic influences for A Means to an End as the painter George Shaw, photographers Gregory Crewdson and Mark Power and filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami.
